Where to buy shibari rope in the Benelux
A field guide to shibari rope shops in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, plus the adjacent EU shops that ship to the Benelux. Including us, and including who we are not best for.
Belgium has more rope shops than most people realise, the Netherlands has a handful, and Luxembourg has none we’re aware of. A handful of adjacent EU shops ship in to fill the gaps. We are one of the Belgian options. Below is an overview of the shops we recommend and what each is great for, with a section at the end on who we are not best for, so you can buy from the right place first time.
Belgium
Tsuri Neko, Leuven (us)
8 m Ogawa jute at 6 mm and POSH at 5 mm, cleaned and hand-finished in Leuven. EMT shears bundled with every kit. We are best for a clean default kit, consistent Belgian-finished rope, and fast EU dispatch. Prices are on the starter-kit guide and the product pages.
Hakukumu Ropes, Kapellen (Antwerp)
Coloured jute in two tiers, Basic and Luxury. Appointment-based rather than a walk-in shop, so write first. hakukumuropes.com.
Shibari-Tantra, Ghent
Teaching-led, with an online shop selling jute, hemp and POSH at 5.5 and 6 mm in several lengths. Jute is offered both unfinished and treated, so check which you are buying: an unfinished rope is cheaper because you do the work. We have not bought from them. shibari-tantra.be.
Brussels
Subspace, Rue Lebeau 13, is a Brussels shibari studio with a webshop selling natural hemp at 5 and 6 mm, prepared by hand in Belgium. We know them and recommend them without hedging, and they are the nearest hemp source to us. subspace-bxl.be/webshop.
For JBO-free jute or wider accessory ranges, the German and French specialists below are the closest options.
Magnum Ursus Sadistic Tools, Belgium
Broader-than-rope catalogue with a rope section. Good if you are buying rope alongside other studio kit and want a single supplier. Based in Hasselt. Etsy is the storefront.
SM-speeltjes, Kasterlee
General Belgian adult catalogue with a rope section. Quick local pickup if you are in the Kasterlee area or close to Antwerp. sm-speeltjes.com.
Art of Ropes, Torhout
Workshop-led shop with jute and synthetic stock, though they have announced the end of their natural-fibre line and are selling off what remains. Worth knowing if you want a class plus rope rather than only rope. artofropes.com.
Netherlands
Ellipsis Rope, Rotterdam
Long-running Rotterdam community outfit. FetLife is the public touchpoint for ordering remotely.
Others in the Netherlands
Shibari.nl do custom-finished hemp, though their storefront closes periodically. Martijn Gorree lists finished 5 mm JBO-free jute in 8 m.
Luxembourg
No dedicated shibari rope shop in Luxembourg that we know of. Most of the shops above and below ship to LU, but check at checkout before ordering, particularly the smaller community-led ones. Delivery times vary by carrier and are not worth quoting here.
Adjacent EU shops worth knowing
Most of these ship to the Benelux and cover capabilities we do not. Check delivery at checkout: Kinbaku Lounge’s shop currently delivers within Denmark only.
Anatomie / Shibari Store EU, London (UK)
Long-established. Curated kits, conditioning gear, a very broad catalogue, and treated jute at 7.5 m and 15 m. UK-based with EU VAT and customs handling. eu.shibaristore.com.
AMATSUNAWA, Germany
The EU reference shop for non-mineral-oil-batched jute. First place to buy if JBO matters to you specifically. Strong technical documentation on strength, fibre, and care. amatsunawa.com.
TheRopestry, Germany
JBO-free jute and food-grade yarn, 6 mm natural hemp sold by the metre or on spools, an esparto-grass specialty line, and an in-house teaching programme. theropestry.com.
VÆGABØUND, Halle (Saale), Germany
Their own hemp line at 5 and 6 mm in 8 m lengths, hand-broken, flamed and jojoba-treated, so it arrives ready to tie. Also jute. One of the few EU shops where hemp is the headline. en.vaegabound.com/shop.
Koumanawa, Germany
Specialist supplier with strong public conditioning documentation, particularly on jute oiling and finishing. Worth reading even if you do not buy from them. koumanawa.com.
Place des Cordes, Paris, France
French boutique with a curated catalogue of jute and hemp, plus finer rope sizes and shorter standard lengths than most. Good if you want to compare fibres. placedescordes.com.
Kinbaku Lounge, Copenhagen, Denmark
Workshop and shop. Their webshop currently delivers within Denmark only, with pickup in Copenhagen, so this is for buying locally when travelling for classes rather than ordering in. kinbakulounge.dk.
Who we are not best for
We do not claim to be everyone’s shop.
- Soybean-batched “JBO-free” jute. Buy from AMATSUNAWA. Our jute is mineral-oil-batched at source and Belgian-finished in Leuven; theirs is soybean-batched.
- Hemp. Subspace in Brussels is the nearest, and VÆGABØUND in Germany the specialist. We do not stock hemp.
- A choice of synthetics. We stock one synthetic, POSH, in one diameter. If you want to compare several, look at the German and UK shops above.
- Bulk wholesale or workshop-scale orders. The German shops will quote bulk pricing; we sell at retail-catalogue scale.
- Commissioned or custom finishing. We finish only the rope we sell.
- High-street walk-in retail outside Leuven. Pickup in Leuven is possible by arrangement; we do not run a shop front.
For everything else (a default starter kit, Belgian-finished consistency, fast EU dispatch), we are the right answer.
Buying-decision summary
- Belgium, no specific capability needed: us, Magnum Ursus, SM-speeltjes, or Art of Ropes depending on what is nearest and what else you are buying.
- Netherlands: Shibari.nl or Martijn Gorree, both small and intermittent. Ellipsis Rope is a community contact rather than a catalogue.
- Luxembourg: most of the named shops ship; verify at checkout for community-led suppliers.
- JBO-free jute: AMATSUNAWA.
- Hemp: Subspace in Brussels, VÆGABØUND in Germany, or Place des Cordes in Paris.
- A choice of synthetics: the German and UK shops.
- First kit, anywhere in the EU, no preferences: see the starter-kit guide and then come back here to pick the shop nearest to you.
The fibre choice is covered in POSH vs jute and jute vs hemp. The JBO discussion is in JBO and batching oils. The thickness and length discussions are in rope thickness and rope length.
